"Climate Change is the defining issue of our age. Previous generations had to deal with the rise of Nazism or communism. This is the issue on which my generation of politicians will be judged. This is our Dunkirk"

Richard Benyon MP (Newbury, Cons.) 2006
"The question is not whether climate change is happening, but whether, in the face of this emergency, we ourselves can change fast enough."

Kofi Annan, November 2006
"Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global average sea level."

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Feb 2007
"International scientific consensus agrees that increasing levels of man-made greenhouse gases are leading to global climate change."

The Royal Society website, 2007
Baydon Meadow Community Wind Turbine

The Baydon Meadow Community Wind Turbine project is an exciting development which aims to help reduce West Berkshire's greenhouse gas emissions, help meet its renewable energy targets while providing an opportunity for community ownership. Following the refusal of permission by West Berkshire Council in December 2007, a planning appeal was lodged in early June 2008.

The proposal is located about 100m north of the M4, about ¾ mile north-west of the Membury Motorway Service Area. The nearest villages are Baydon (about 1 mile north-west) and Lambourn (over 2 miles north-east).

The project itself consists of a single wind turbine of up to 81m to the very top of the blades in the vertical position (about half the height of the nearby Membury mast which is about 153m to the very top).

The wind turbine would:

  • Generate enough electricity for approximately 640 typical UK homes (there are about 215 homes in Baydon and 1,674 homes in Lambourn)

  • Reduce emissions of the main greenhouse gas carbon dioxide by over 2,500 tonnes per year, saving over £110,000 per year in costs associated with damage caused as a result of climate change.

  • Allow members of the local community the opportunity to buy a share in the project, through collaboration with Energy4All
